Avatars and Anime characters are the contemporary art galleries soup du jour, I think. The idea of masks being an affirmation of self rather than an act of secrecy is interesting. The idea is that you are using anonymity to act how you want, to be free to be your self...

It reminds me of Kierkegard's words about depair, suggesting that a mask shouldn't be necessary for the mask wearer's psyche but the implication is that it is for the rest of the world.
